Hydrangea macrophylla (Hortensia Group) is the most popular group in the genus Hydrangea, where most gardens have at least one plant, while others have numerous in a range of colors. Their popularity stems from their fantastic ability to smother themselves with numerous round blooms in a variety of gorgeous colors over much of summer and into the autumn. Their beauty is accentuated by the lushness of their rich green foliage that provides a perfect background to the blooms. In autumn, the green foliage of many different cultivars assumes spectacular autumn colors - yellow, gold, orange, red, burgundy etc., and so do the flowers change their colors in autumn time. But, perhaps, the most fascinating aspect of flower color change, is that related to the relative acidity or alkalinity of the soil, such that in alkaline soils most cultivars exhibit pink, red or crimson, while on acidic soils the color goes towards lilac, purple, shades of blue or even indigo blue. A single cultivar is capable of assuming most of mentioned colors if it is planted in differing soil ph, and even the single bush can have different color blooms at the very same time. The ability of these plants to change the color of their flowers so spectacularly makes them fairly unique and almost indispensable garden subjects.

However, certain cultivars maintain one color whatever the soil is like, such as many whites and reds. To achieve the desired color, you can alter the acidity of the soil by adding aluminium sulphate to it around plants, or garden lime to increase alkalinity.

Plants in this group are versatile in terms of their size, from dwarfs of 15cm high to 2m or more. So, they can be grown on patios, in tubs and window boxes and as house plants, any soil, sun and part shade. Most are hardy, moisture loving deciduous woody plants. We grow hundreds of cultivars, that will gradually be listed on this site.
On offer are unamed cultivars from this group in the following colours: a) blue, b) pink, c) red and d) white. Height:1 -2m
